Starring Tom Gualtieri
Written by Tom Gualtieri & Heather Hill
Directed by Heather Hill

2013 DRAMA DESK Award Nominee

Co-authors TOM GUALTIERI and HEATHER HILL (who also directs) examine Shakespeare’s bloodbath in a funny and frightening 80 minutes. Mr. Gualtieri inhabits 19 characters, including the tragic hero, 3 witches, a handful of demonic apparitions, the Macduff family, and a “silky, sinuous, glittering snake of a Lady Macbeth.”

Portraying the Macbeths as an ordinary couple overrun by the dark thoughts within us all, Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy is brought into a whole new light. Gualtieri & Hill excavate the play’s dark themes, retaining the horror of the original while illuminating its relevance for today’s audiences. The addition of a gleefully wicked narrator gives the show added dimension.

First performed at the 2003 Midtown International Theatre Festival, THAT PLAY: A Solo Macbeth received across-the-board raves. The sold-out New York City run led to engagements at The Kitchen Theatre in Ithaca, NY, and the Belt Theatre, NYC (formerly part of The Zipper Theatre Complex.) In a revised version which began life in the 2012-2013 theatre season, THAT PLAY was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and garnered unanimous, glowing reviews.

THAT PLAY: A Solo Macbeth has proven to be a compelling event for both adults and students. THAT PLAY is available for bookings at intimate or large venues and can be presented with minimal or more intricate technical requirements. Productions in educational settings can be provided with a study guide and teaching segment.
